Serbia Sets Off to the Top

The year of 2008 marked the beginning of the creation of a new team in a new country – SERBIA, the name under which our national team had first appeared in 2007. It had actually been in the summer of 2007 that our young national teams showed an unprecedented domination in Europe. Dusan Ivkovic, one of the most prominent national team coaches, took over the responsibility for a third time and began a hard work on putting together a new, talented and prosperous team.

The team easily passed the European Championship qualifying games. The 2009 European Championship in Poland once again witnessed all the splendor of our talents and all the beauty of basketball. The team failed to repeat their performance from the Preliminary Round against Spain, losing to them in the finals and winning the silver medal. However, this silver shined as gold and showed all the potential of a team capable of achieving top results in the years to come.

The World Championship in Turkey proved that Serbia had a team for the highest achievements. The countries such as Argentina and Spain, whose domination at the basketball courts was being witnessed for years, had to lay down their arms before our team. The host team of Turkey in the semi-final game won the game by margin of 1 point, we were left without a medal, but our team’s performance proved that we very well deserved it.
